THE SCHOOL OF ROMANCE, AN IMPOSSIBLE DREAM?

For those of you who have been following my journey on Instagram, you would have observed that I have been privileged to be able to chat ‘LIVE’ to 3 sensational women who share a common bond. They are all survivors of the trailer trash reality TV show “Married at First Sight”.

I confess that initially my sense of enquiry was somewhat ghoulish but after completing my research I soon realised that these were wonderful women and in their own individual ways, were able to stamp their own brand of courage onto the otherwise bland landscape of that train wreck of a program. All three women entered the arena hoping to find love and all three failed or were set up to fail and were compelled to endure embarrassments, humiliation and disappointments in front of a national and now international audience.

I have now become friends with all three, and, whilst they are all very different, I am able to testify to their wonderful qualities as real women with hearts of gold. In my last “LIVE” with Mishel Meshes from season 7 of Married at First Sight she asked rhetorically “JD, why isn’t there a school for gentlemen and more importantly a syllabus for romance?” She went onto ask, “where do real men learn these values today?”

Whilst saddened by the reality of her question, I was also happy to see that my perspective as a male was validated and shared by a mature woman also seeking love in her life. So, welcome to my ‘School of Romance’. Our Headmaster is Don Quixote the ‘the Man of La Mancha”. The way in which Don Quixote treats, honours and worships women is an application of the syllabus for my school of romance. The syllabus was written by a famous Spanish literary giant Miguel de Cervantes, The broadway musical adaptation of the syllabus was a huge success and has left an indelible mark on our culture with the smash hit song “Impossible Dream”.

It is a story of misplaced romantic idealism where the lead character’s mission is to find his Dulcinea “the perfect woman” who embodies every attribute and virtue that would bedazzle a man.

To the real world, Don Quixote is an 80 year old frail geriatric with early onset dementia and delusions of grandeur. His dream girl who he names Dulcinea is really Al-Donza, the local hooker. No doubt the producers of Married at First Sight might regard them as a dream match for next season. In reality Don Quixote’s life is a quest for purity and in searching for the love of his life he meets Al-Donza the village hooker. However he can only see the beauty of her spirit and soul.

The story is a metaphor for life, perfect love is sometimes the product of delusion. The paradox is that the ugliness of reality is Don Quixote’s parallel universe. He adores her unconditionally and makes her feel as though she is a princess and truly exceptional. He has her back no matter what the odds, no matter what the obstacle is. His dream is the impossible dream. With her at his side he can conquer the world. He never gives up on love and reassures her every moment that they are together. If you meet that special person that moves your soul …..dream the impossible dream.

The lessons to be learnt from this beautiful tale are:
  1. If you feel an attraction to someone, either physically, spiritually or intellectually, focus your attention on that one person only to the exclusion of all others

  2. Treat them with respect and put them on a pedestal

  3. Make every opportunity to be in their presence a romantic adventure

  4. If it doesn’t work out, be honest and forthright and if you have followed rules 1 to 3 you have nothing to worry about as you will have acted with honour and integrity

Never give up on love...
